Justian Meriwether (born September 11, 1991), better known as King Jay, is an American, independent, hip-hop recording artist from Compton, California, backed by Yacht Club Music (YCM). The first single released on the label Coastin, a smooth mid-pace song that is quintessential to west coast artistry, was highly liked and received social media accolades from west coast legends G Malone and Keith Murray.
Early Life: Born in Compton King Jay, his mother and older brother moved to Forth Worth Texas amid racial discrimination and threats from locals. Returning to Compton two years later, his family endured the same social paradigm; at least it was home. Back in Compton King Jay tuned into his favorite artist, DJ Quik, to tune out violence and drug abuse. Though he was very skilled in sports King Jay loved writing and with inspiration from Quik, he brought his first composition notebook. In it, he wrote about his life experiences: being raised by a single mother and committed grandmother, being a role model to his younger siblings, seeing his underage brother being sentenced to 12 years in prison, the growing tension between the residents and law enforcement, hatred and discrimination in different contexts, making bad decisions and learning from them, becoming successful on his own terms and even what it’s like to coast through the hub city on a perfect afternoon. The result is a growing talent, a rapper who is relatable, authentic and the voice of young men across this nation.
